Recycling is of great importance to restrict waste going to
landfill, and to limit the use of irreplaceable raw materials. Smith Construction Group
Ltd is a leading recycling business, based in Milton Keynes,
Buckinghamshire, and as part of its ongoing expansion has bought a
Shufflebottom steel-framed building to use as a waste transfer
station.
The building, to the BS 5950 industrial specification, is 28m by
32m and 9m high to the eaves, and has five 5.6m bays. The integral
Shufflebottom Eaves Beam Gutter System is incorporated. The
steelwork is shotblast to BS SA 2.5, and pained blue with zinc
phosphate high build primer.
The roof has 40 rooflights, and is clad with 0.7mm single-skin
plastic-coated box profile. One side and one end are clad with
vertical 0.5mm plastic-coated leathergrain-finish insulated
composite panels with a 40mm core with drip flashing below the
cladding, and Ultrazed side rails. The other end and side have
vertical 0.5mm single-skin plastic-coated box profile, also with
drip flashing and Ultrazed side rails.
For Smith Construction Group, recycling activities fit well with
its other specialities of groundworks, earthworks, civil
engineering, concrete supply and skip hire.
