Shufflebottom and KIER – delivering a lasting legacy for Newport

We’re starting the New Year with some great news that we didn’t get around the sharing at the end of 2023! We’re proud to report that we’ve been commissioned by our client, Cardiff HQ’d KIER Wales and West, to work with them on the delivery of a new integrated Health and Wellbeing Centre in Newport East, named 19 Hills Health & Wellbeing Centre.

This is a huge project for Newport and a huge project for Wales. The value of the Newport Project is £28 million and is part of the overall £560 million NHS Building Work for Wales Framework. As one of the UK’s leading providers of Infrastructure Services, Construction & Property Developments – with key strengths in healthcare and a 100 year respected track record – KIER was awarded the community-led project via this Framework.

Work on the project is already well underway and is due for completion in 2025. When finished, the development based in the Ringland area of Newport, will house two existing GP practices working independently: Ringland Medical Practice and Park Surgery alongside Ringland Dental Surgery. The development will also incorporate an existing community hub which will be joined to the new building strengthening the service offering in the area with the aim of supporting wellbeing, reducing loneliness and promoting independent living.

We have been providing the inner strength for the project, delivering on-site 263.4 tonnes of hot-rolled steel and 5.3 tonnes of cold-rolled steel. And it’s was hugely satisfying that Shufflebottom was recognised by KIER with the award of the KIER Wales Award for Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) for autumn 2023 which is now sitting proudly in our display cabinet at HQ here in Cross Hands. The SHE Award is recognition of our activity and project specific documentation in accordance with KIER’s Health & Safety specifications.

Shufflebottom has long been respected as a sector leader in H&S so this is such validation of what we do and the way we do it. It is also so rewarding to work with KIER, and together deliver projects for communities that will see long and lasting legacies through our work.
