National Apprenticeship Week: The Power of Investing in People

At Shufflebottom, we have always believed that strong buildings start with strong people. National Apprenticeship Week is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the individuals who are shaping the future of our business and the steel industry.

One of those people is Lewis Dicks.

Lewis joined Shufflebottom straight from school and has now been with us for over five years. During that time, he has completed his Level 2 Certificate in Engineering, his Level 3 Diploma in Engineering – Fabrication and Welding, and a Level 2 qualification in Essential Digital Literacy Skills. Today, Lewis has secured a permanent role with Shufflebottom and continues to develop his skills within our fabrication team.

Like many apprentices, Lewis started out quietly, learning the ropes and building confidence. Over time, he worked across different benches, gaining experience in the wide range of fabrication and welding processes that go into our steel-framed buildings. As his skills developed, so did his confidence. He learned how to operate key machinery, became highly competent in his work, and grew into someone his team and managers can rely on.

Lewis’s manager, Eddie Roche, reflects on his progress:

“Lewis has done really well all the way through his apprenticeship. When he started with us he was a quiet lad, but he grew in confidence, communication and ability. He learned different fabrication and welding processes, became very good at operating machinery, and now works independently on his own bench. I am very confident he will continue to grow and become a great asset to Shufflebottom and Embrace Steel.”

Stories like Lewis’s matter because they reflect what Shufflebottom stands for. We are a family-founded business with roots in Wales, and we believe in investing in people for the long term. Apprenticeships allow us to pass on skills, uphold quality, and ensure that the expertise behind our steel-framed agricultural, equestrian, industrial and commercial buildings continue for generations to come.

As we mark National Apprenticeship Week, we are proud of Lewis and every apprentice who has chosen to build their future with us. By supporting training, learning and progression, we are not just building careers. We are building a stronger future for our industry.
