Delivering a Second building for Green Farms of Oxfordshire

There is always something thrilling about delivering a first building for a new customer. Perhaps as satisfying is when that customer comes back to you for the second!

Such is the case with WC Green and Son Ltd at Akeman Street Farm at Combe near Witney in Oxfordshire, part of the Green Farms brand www.greenfarms.co.uk. The customer, The Green Family, invested in Shufflebottom’s experience of manufacturing, delivering and erecting steel-framed buildings for the agricultural sector, for the supply of a portal framed end extension to his existing Shufflebottom building.

Other factors for ordering from Shufflebottom were:

  • Confidence in a well established company

  • Guarantee of high quality materials

  • The amount of steel within the structure compared with others on the market which are often lighter and have too little steel-work within the frame

The Green Farms brand is one of the longest established families of farmers in this part of the world, and Akeman Street Farm, Combe, is positioned on the ancient Roman Road that connected Hertfordshire in the east of England with Gloucestershire to the west. Today, their mission states that they are, “responsible good growers – feeding the nation,” through their mixed farm activities: growing cereals, leguminous crops and oil seeds.

The latest Shufflebottom building at Akeman Street Farm (built to Agricultural Specification – CE Marked to Execution Class 2) is to be used as a Grain Store Building. Shufflebottom managed the laying of the foundations (5m level fill) and the erection of the building which is 36.576m long x 25m wide x 7.6m to eaves and incorporating 6 x 6.096m bays. The steelwork is shot blast to B.S SA 2.5. Hot Dipped Galvanised Finish to BNEN 1411. Roof is clad in Natural Grey P6R Fibre Cement and sides clad in Vertical 0.5mm Plastic Coated Box Profile with Ultrarazed side rails. Three 5.75m wide x 5.5m high three phase operated roller doors were also installed.

The first and this second project were handled by Shufflebottom’s dedicated specialist, Daniel Lacey, whose expertise is highly valued in the East of England where he has placed over 900 buildings to happy customers such as WC Green & Son.
