A New Steel-Framed Aircraft Hangar at Elmsett Airfield

Elmsett airfield on a hazy morning as the sun rises

As aircraft storage space becomes increasingly limited across the UK, demand for secure, high-quality hangars continues to grow.

At Elmsett Airfield in Suffolk, Heathpatch Ltd has responded with the construction of a new insulated steel-framed aircraft hangar, delivered by Shufflebottom as part of a long-standing working partnership built on quality and reliability.

For diversified estates and commercial operators, infrastructure investment must deliver long-term value. This latest development demonstrates how well-designed steel-framed buildings can support commercial growth.

A Long-Term Partnership Built on Quality

Charles Course, Group Chairman of Heathpatch Ltd, oversees a diverse portfolio that includes thousands of acres of farmland alongside commercial ventures such as Elmsett Airfield.

Shufflebottom has delivered multiple steel-framed buildings for the business over the years, including:

  • Agricultural workshops

  • Brewery cold storage

  • Farm structures

  • Previous aircraft hangars

“Shufflebottom have done a lot of building projects for us, and they’re always completed to a very good standard. That’s why we keep coming back,” explains Charles.

Responding to Demand for Aircraft Storage in the UK

With many regional airfields being lost to development, aircraft hangar space is becoming increasingly scarce. As owner and operator of the private grass airfield at Elmsett, Heathpatch recognised an opportunity to expand capacity by adding a new insulated steel-framed hangar to complement the three existing buildings on site.

The result is a substantial commercial steel building designed specifically for aircraft storage.

Steel-Framed Aircraft Hangar Specification

The new aircraft hangar features:

  • Insulated steel frame construction

  • Merlin Grey cladding finish

  • 20 metre insulated Dewson electronic bi-fold door

  • 16 metre insulated Dewson electronic bi-fold door

  • Central dividing wall to create flexible internal spaces

The wide clear spans achievable with steel-framed buildings make them ideal for aviation use, allowing unrestricted internal layouts and easy aircraft manoeuvrability.

Consistency across contractors and project partners ensured smooth delivery, reinforcing the value of working with an experienced steel building manufacturer.

Supporting Long-Term Commercial Growth

The new hangar strengthens Elmsett Airfield’s position as a sought-after private aviation location. The site is also home to independent aviation maintenance company Aero Anglia, further enhancing its commercial appeal.

For Heathpatch, this is part of a longer-term growth strategy.

We’re hoping this won’t be the last addition to the site. Depending on planning, we aim to put up another hangar to meet continuing demand for private aircraft storage. And that will be a Shufflebottom structure too,” adds Charles.

For estates, commercial landlords and diversified landowners, steel-framed industrial buildings offer durability, flexibility and long-term asset performance.

At Shufflebottom, all buildings are designed and fabricated at our facility in Cross Hands, South Wales, before being supplied and erected across the UK.
